CSR Classics is All About Old School Rides
If the CSR part of the title sounds familiar, that is because this game is actually the next in line to CSR Racing –it follows the same format, focuses on drag racing, and borrows much of the original game’s mechanics. What makes classics so different however, is the entire lineup of cars and the all new retro environment. Players get to take on the “classics” from the Turino to the Impala as they race against various dedicated classic-car racing groups in order to gain the highest rank.
All in the Gear
In this game, both car performance and player speed matter –in fact, these two are the only things that matter in every single race. Just having a really fast car is not gonna help if you cannot shift gears properly, and having really good control instincts will not be enough to win you the race. Players have to pay close attention to the car’s optimum shifting speed (or wait for the indicator light to go green, but that is a little less accurate) and when that hits, you must quickly shift up. Wait too soon or too long and your opponent will gain speed faster than you.
There is no steering here, just gas for the start of the race, a pad for shifting your gear up and another one for shifting your gear down. Lastly, there’s a button for nitro which opens once you purchase the nitro upgrade –we highly recommend it since it is very useful in all the matches.
Upgrading and Customizing Cars
Since you are going to be dealing with classic vehicles, the game does not have you buying the cars from virtual stores, instead, you acquire cars that have been loved or unloved by previous owners. As expected, loved cars are shiny and look brand new since they have been cared for (to buy these, you will need premium currency). The unloved cars are a whole lot cheaper and can be gained using normal in-game cash, the catch is that these old cars are in pretty bad shape so they will have to go through a lot of restoration processing before they start looking as their “loved” counterparts.
Once you finally get a car, you will want to do a few races in order to win some funds for upgrading and restoring. Upgrades will improve your car’s tires, engines, carburetor, muffler, gear box, etc. The restoration process is for turning beat up cars into brand new ones –but this is not a one-time deal, you will need to restore several time in order to get the look right. As expect, each level or tier of the upgrades will cost you more than the previous, and upon reaching upgrade level 5, you cannot go higher –so if you need better performance, you will want a better car.
Once customization option we highly recommend are the premium decals –all of these will award you with bonus cash for winning a race, but the premium ones earn a significant amount that will make things so much easier early in the game. So as soon as you earn around 40-50 of the premium coins, you should try checking these out.
The Verdict: This Game Should Be Loved
Whether you just love classic cars or just enjoy a good drag race, CSR Classic delivers. The easy to navigate user interface means that you never accidentally press something you never meant to and the impressive visual quality of the vehicles meant that every amount of time and effort you spend making your car better gets a graphical reaction that you can savor. Seeing an unloved car go from really rusty and grimy into something that you would expect to see in a showroom is nothing short of satisfying. Of course, the same can be said of being behind in a race and managing to finally outrun your opponent by the time you shift into 4th gear. This game provides players with a significant amount of stuff to do, vehicles to collect, and challenges to accomplish –all in a single app.
